Totowa

The borough of Totowa is located in Passaic County in the state of New Jersey. The 2,611.2-acre borough sits along the Passaic River. Christopher Columbus Highway and Route 46 travel through the southeastern section of the town. Some other roadways are Totowa Road, Minnisink Road, Union Boulevard, and Riverview Drive. Hillcrest is to the northeast of the borough, while Singac is to its south. Mountain View and Preakness are west of the area, and Woodland Park and Stoney Road are to the east. 

History

The borough's name comes from the language of the Native Americans as they described the Great Falls of the Passaic River. It means sinking or falling waters or possibly between mountains and water. 

George Willocks, a land speculator from Scottland, purchased the tract of land then known as Willock's Patent in 1696. This land included most of the present-day borough. The land was resold to Anthony Brockholls, an English Commander-in-Cheif, and the Van Houten family. The land was renamed the "Totowa Patent."

Neighborhood

Within the borough are four cemeteries, and many say there are more dead people than living in the neighborhood. These cemeteries include:

  • A.M. White Lodge Jewish Cemetery

The borough's population was 10,804 in 2010, which consisted of 3,783 households and 2,826 families. This was an increase of 9.2% from 2000. The ethnic makeup of the residents was the following:

  • 14.35% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.10% Native American
  • 5.92% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 4.22% other races
  • 2.02% two or more races
