The Historic Railroad Community of Aldene, NJ

Aldene

The neighborhood of Aldene is located to the west of Roselle Park but south of Kenilworth. Westfield Avenue West forms the southern border, and the Garden State Parkway creates the western. Railroad History

The area is home to the Aldene Connection, from which it was named. During the mid-1960s, the Central Railroad of New Jersey began to lose money. In an attempt to cut costs, the state devised a plan for a railroad transportation division headed by Dwight R. G. Palmer. Palmer was responsible for preserving the railway system to become a cheaper alternative to building new highways. This became known as the Aldene Plan.

The plan involved building a connection between the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Lehigh Valley Railroad that would eliminate the need for the labor-intensive ferry service as well as the majority of the Communipaw Terminal located in Jersey City. This idea was thought to save $1.5 million annually. The plan went into effect on May 1, 1967.
