Algers Mills

The unincorporated community of Algers Mills is located within Wall Township in the southern section of Monmouth County, in New Jersey. The community is just north of Osbornes Mills and Allenwood. It is south of Glendola and New Bedford. Spring Lake Heights is to the east of the town, as Allaire Village is to the town's west. Allaire Road, Tiltons Corner Road, Baileys Corner Road, and 18th Avenue all run through the community. 

Historical Landmark

The Allgor-Barkalow Homestead, located off of North Bedford Road, has been well preserved for being built in the mid-19th century. The house was designed using Greek Revival design. One of the community's founders lived within the estate that consisted of the main house, a secondary house, and some smaller outbuildings. 

James L. Allgor was one of the early community founders and on the committee for 33 years. He was a successful entrepreneur, a farmer, a merchant, and more. He opened a store on the property in 1860. He was also involved with the Squankum Railroad and Marl Company. 

When Allgor died, he passed his property to his daughter Lavinia Barkalow. Barkalow then deeded the property to Job S. Barkalow. It wasn't until 1975 that the Wall Township Board of Education took possession of the estate. It now serves the community as the Old Wall Historical Society. 

Neighborhood

The community is home to the Wall Township Athletic Fields, located on Baileys Corner Road. On the grounds are many athletic fields such as:

  • football and cheerleader fields 
  • Pop Warner fields
  • lacrosse fields
  • soccer fields

Within the neighborhood are several places for worship, including:

  • Full Gospel Church - Assemblies of God - located on East Hurley Pond Road
  • The Church of Saint Michael The Archangel - located on Allenwood Road
  • Calvary Presbyterian Church - located on Allenwood Road

The neighborhood's income is within the 15% highest in the country. The most common occupations held by the employed adults includes: 

  • 51.1% executive, management, and professional positions

  • 13.7% manufacturing and laborer occupations
