All About Fairview, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Fairview, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys invite you to get to know the community along with what it has to offer its residents.

The historic neighborhood of Fairview is situated in the southern region of Camden County in the state of New Jersey. Newton Creek forms three sides of the community's borders. Black Horse Pike forms the western edge as North-South Freeway travels along its eastern border. Some neighboring communities include Woodlynne, Audubon Park, Gloucester City, and Collingswood.

The community is comprised of many historical landmarks that help make up the historic district surrounding it center, Yorkship Square. The neighborhood, initially known as Yorkship Village, was founded in 1918 during World War I. It was intended as a planned community for shipyard workers and their families to live as they commuted to New York to work in the shipyards.

The war brought a boom in shipbuilding which caused an influx of workers in dire need of housing. The development began with 1,000 homes in 1921 and cost an estimated $11 million to develop. When the war was over, the Emergency Fleet Corporation started selling all 1,579 houses and 59 apartments, and by 1924, all but 12 of the houses were sold.

The village was renamed in 1922, but the original elementary school still operates as Yorkship Elementary School. Most of the original streets were named for famous naval vessels during the time.

Walking around Yorkship Square gives off a nostalgic feeling with all the historical buildings surrounding the garden. Aside from the residential row housing, many restaurants and retail shops can be found on the square, such as:

  • Square Food Market
  • Fulai Chinese Restaurant
  • Barber's Ink Barbershop
  • Hometown Pharmacy
  • Star Donut

In 2000, the community had a population of 5,947. While English is the first language of 71.1% of the households, many residents also speak Italian and Spanish. The neighborhood has more Puerto Rican and African ancestry residents than any other neighborhood in the United States. The breakdown of the racial demographics includes:

  • Puerto Rican (26.7%)
  • Sub-Saharan African (13.1%)
  • African (11.0%)
  • Irish (5.9%)
  • Dominican (4.6%)

The households are relatively low income, and as many as 42.4% of the children live below the poverty line. Additionally, 34.2% of the families are managed by single mothers. The workforce includes the following occupations:

  • manufacturing and laborer occupations (31.1%)
  • sales and service jobs (27.4%)
  • executive, management, and professional occupations (26.1%)
  • clerical, assistant, and tech support roles (14.2%)
