Athenia

Athenia, New Jersey, is located 10 miles north of Newark and only a 34-minute drive from Manhattan, New York. Colfax and Clifton Avenues are the area's main roadways.

History

This area was initially known as Cloverjack, would undergo many name changes before settling on Athenia in 1883. The following would be some of the proposed names that it would be called over the years:

• Centreville
• West Clifton
• Cheap Josie's
• Tome's Mill

Elders of the town, including both Judges Simmons and Terhune, pressed for the town to stick with the original. However, the Delaware Lackawana & Western Railroad and the Newark branch of the Erie Railroad referred to the area as Centreville. The post office would be the final determiner for naming the area based on another town was already Centreville, Athenia became its name.

Vanderhoef-Westervelt House

One of Passaic County's oldest buildings was built around 1720 and was home to Gilbert Vanderhoef. Vanderhoef was the owner of the only flour and gristmill during that time. Until 1897, the house served as a gristmill, and then it became home to the Westervelt family. The building underwent major renovations in 2018 and was reopened as the new home of the Departments of Cultural & Historical Affairs and Parks & Recreation.
