Audubon

The borough of Audubon is situated in the lower section of Camden County in northern New Jersey. It lies just north of Haddon Heights and south of Oaklyn. To its east is West Haddonfield and across Haddon Lake is Highland Park and Mt. Ephraim. South White Horse Pike, or U.S. Route 30, travels across the town and serves as the main road. 

History

In the late 17th century, several landowners owned the land, and it was mostly covered in farms and mills. It was part of Newton Township at the time, and many homesteads were built during the early 1700s. Two of these estates are still standing today. John Low built the Low-Stokes-Nicholson house in 1732. The Mansion House, built by Simon Breach in 1740, had an addition added in 1853 by John Dialogue, a shipbuilder. The homestead was owned by Samuel Nicholson Rhodes during 1898–1912 and referred to as Cedarcroft. 

The town was named after a naturalist, John James Audubon, and incorporated as a borough in 1905. Audubon was born in France but moved into the area in 1803 to avoid being drafted into the Napoleonic War. Upon arrival in America, he caught yellow fever and was nursed back to health by a Quaker woman in a boarding house. She taught him English before joining his family at the 284-acre Mill Grove farm in Audubon. In 1947, portions of the town were taken to form the Audubon Park borough located just north. 

Neighborhood Heros

The neighborhood is home to three recipients of the Medal of Honor, more than any other town in the country. This honor is one of the highest military decorations and is only awarded to those that have shown acts of valor. The President of the United States awards the medal to the recipient. The Audubon High School is home to a memorial for the three men, who are: 

• Samuel M. Sampler - World War I
• Edward Clyde Benfold - Korean War
• Nelson V. Brittin - Korean War

Demographics

In 2010 the town's population consisted of 8,819 people, which included 3,600 households and 2,293 families. This was a 2.1% decrease from 9,182 in 2000. In fact, the area had seen a steady decrease since 1980 when it decreased 11.7% from 1970 to 1980.

According to the census in 2010, the annual median household income was $73,193. Family incomes averaged $89,399. As many as 37.33% have at least a bachelor's degree. The occupational breakdown of the employed residents was the following:

• 13.23% administration or office support positions
• 13.03% sales or service jobs
• 12.29% management or executive roles
