Avenel

The unincorporated community of Avenel is a census-designated place within the Woodbridge Township. The community sits in the northeastern region of Middlesex County, in the state of New Jersey. It takes up 2,260.48 acres that consist of 9.6 acres of water, such as Woodbridge Creek. The towns that share borders are West Carteret, Colonia, Port Reading, Iselin, and Tremley. 

Early History

The founder of the community was Captain Demarest in 1901 and was named after his daughter. At one point, it was called Demarest on the Hill. Some of the early families that settled in the community including:

• Cooper
• Crowell
• Douglass
• Edgar
• Thorpe

The area's fire department, The Avenel Fire Company #1, was founded in 1912 but not fully organized until 1913. Initial meetings were held at J.B. Edgar. The first appointed commissioners were:

• Dr. A.F. Mount
• J.B. Edgar
• E.A. Moran
• H. Posner 
• J. Praver  

The present-day location was purchased in 1929 after the Super Highway construction forced them to vacate their location on Hyatt Street and Ziegler Avenue. 

Neighborhood

The Avenel Performing Arts Center is a great attraction for the community. It offers musical performances, comedy shows, and much more. Some of the most recent performances include:

Within the community are several places of worship including:

The population of the census-designated place was 17,011 in 2010. This was a decrease of 3.1% from 2000. The count made up 5,150 households and 3,749 families. The breakdown of the races within the residents included:

• 47.89% white
• 19.78% African American
• 0.52% Native American
• 15.84% Hispanic or Latino
• 22.89% Asian
• 0.07% Pacific Islander
• 5.53% other races
• 3.34% two or more races

The average income for a household was $54,929 in 2000. For a family income, the average was $61,029. Men had a median income of  $48,000 per year, while women averaged $31,804 per year. The most common occupations held by the employed residents included:

• 8.8% computers and math
• 7.9% management
• 6.3% transportation
• 5.2% healthcare support
