The slip and fall attorneys in Barclay, NJ at NJ Injury Guys would like to share some history on the Barclay community.
Located in Camden County, New Jersey, the unincorporated community Barclay takes up 1,61.76 acres. Interstate 295 creates the eastern border of the area, and NJ Route 70 runs through its center. Philidelphia is less than a 30-minute drive and about an hour train ride away.
The area initially was inhabited by the Lenape Nation, also known as the Delaware Indians. With the European settlers came the Quakers. The Quakers were formed from the Society of Friends in the 1650s. The principles of their belief include the following:
In 1816 Joseph Thorn, a fourth-generation American and Quaker, purchased 168 acres within the area now known as Barclay. He bought the land from Samuel Kay, another Quaker, for $10,500. However, due to economic hardships brought on by the War of 1812, Thorn was forced to sell his estate.
Joseph W. Cooper would be the next to purchase the land in 1826 for a mere $7,600. Cooper and his family owned a house in Camden but would use this as their summer home. After Cooper died in 1871, his daughter would take control of the property. She married Walter Cooper Barclay, a non-Quaker, in 1882 but passed soon after having her first child. Her son would become the estate holding in 1905 on his 22nd birthday. After his death in 1936, the home was seldom used and was sold in 1954, less the 54 acres retained by his daughter, Helen.
Under the requirement that the property and home be preserved as a recreation center and park, Helen sold her 54 acres to Cherry Hill Township for $335,000 in 1974. Later that year, the property would be named the Barclay Farmstead Museum in her honor. Restoration to the farmhouse began in 1976 with architect John M. Dickey leading.
The neighborhood honors the name as does the following:
Barclay's had a population of 4,428 people in 2010. The racial breakdown of the area is the following:
The average price for a house in the neighborhood is $356,635, which is higher than 46% of other neighborhoods in New Jersey. With 99.5% of the residential real estate consisting of single-family homes and a high percentage of ownership, the option of renting is slim. Rental prices on what is available are higher than 80.8% of other areas in New Jersey at an average monthly cost of $2,949.
