Getting to Know Bayway, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Bayway, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys, would like to share some interesting features about the neighborhood.

Bayway

Bayway is an unincorporated community located in the city of Linden situated in the southeastern region of Union County, New Jersey. Gulfport Reach forms the eastern border of the area while Morses Creek flows along the southern edge. The New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 278 are the main roadways that travel through or around the town. Morses Mill Road and Brunswick Avenue serve the local commute.

History of the Refinery

The Bayway Refinery, now referred to as the Phillips 66 Refinery, is located in the heart of the industrial town on Park Avenue. John D. Rockefeller founded the refinery. Rockefeller acquired several hundred acres of land between Linden and Elizabeth from the former Morse family estate. Construction began in 1907, and the Bayway Refinery was completed in 1909.

Bayway quickly became one of the top research facilities in the state. The refinery was the first to begin using the hydrogenation process that allowed it to create larger amounts of crude products. In 1919 the refinery's scientists invented the first petrochemical, isopropyl alcohol.

During World War II, the facility provided high octane aviation fuel and manufactured materials that helped produce explosives. After the war, the refinery expanded thanks to an investment by Esso in 1947. This expansion allowed the facility to become the largest in the world for producing gasoline and heating oil.

Phillips Petroleum purchased the refinery in 2001 and, with the addition of a new polypropylene facility in 2003, produces 775 million pounds each year.
