A Deeper Look into Belmar, NJ

The worker's comp lawyers in Belmar, NJ at NJ Injury Guys have shared some interesting details about the area and its history.

Belmar

Belmar is a borough covering 1036.8 acres, of which 364.8 acres is water, such as Silver Lake. The eastern border lies along the Atlantic Ocean, and South Arm flows across its northern edge. Shark River helps for the western border as River Road runs along the waterfront. West Belmar and Lake Como are the borough's southern neighbors and across the water is Avon-by-the-Sea and Shark River Hills.

History

The area was initially known as Ocean Beach borough, which was incorporated in 1885, taking land from Wall Township. In 1889 it was known as the City of Elcho borough, but this only lasted a few weeks until it became the City of Belmar borough. Finally, on November 20, 1890, the area was renamed Borough of Belmar, meaning beautiful sea in Italian.

A historical landmark within the town is the Belmar Public Library. The library opened in 1911 and was established by a women's group. Although the library has taken on many locations, it has stood at its current 10th Avenue and East Street location since 1914. It was one of the original Carnegie libraries and was constructed using a $13,000 grant from the corporation. It was designed by Edward Lippincott Tilton, who also designed Ellis Island. In 2011 a replica of Bruce Springsteen's legendary Fender guitar was placed on the grounds and stood eight feet high.

Coastal Recreation

With most of the town's border being waterfront, it is no wonder that many of the activities focus on water sports and attractions. Eastern Lines presents the annual Belmar Pro Surfing Competition. Surfing professionals from around the world compete. Some of the countries represented, aside from the United States, include:

  • Brazil
  • Dominican Republic
  • Jamaica
  • Barbados
  • Australia

Along Shark River, residents and tourists can take a Jersey Shore Whale Watching Tour. The touring company is noted as being rated number one in whale sightings. They sail out of the Belmar Marina seven days a week throughout the year.
