Belmar

The borough of Belmar is situated on the southeastern edge of Monmouth County in the state of New Jersey. The community takes up 1,036.8 acres that contain 364.8 acres of water, such as Silver Lake. The Shark River helps form the north, west, and eastern borders of the borough. Some of the nearby communities include West Belmar, Avon-By-The-Sea, Shark River Hills, and Lake Como. 

History

The community was known as Ocean Beach from 1885 until 1889. Then it became the City of Elcho, which lasted less than a month before becoming the City of Belmar in May of 1889. However, in November of 1890, it officially changed to the Borough of Belmar. The name is Italian for beautiful sea. 

In 1909, a group of 49 members organized the Belmar Fishing Club. The Ocean Pier Company constructed a clubroom on the pier, and season tickets were sold to its members at a discounted rate. As the club grew more popular and membership increased, it needed to expand. In 1929, construction began on the larger clubhouse. Some of its original members included:
