Blackwood

The unincorporated community of Blackwood is situated in the western region of Gloucester Township, located in Camden County, New Jersey. The community is a census-designated place or CDP that covers 790.4 acres. Included in the area is 5.76 acres of water, such as Farrows Run. Blackwood Lake flows along the town's western border, while Lakeland Road and Davistown Road create the southern border. The North-South Freeway travels along the eastern border as Blenheim Erial Road helps to form the northern. 

History

The area was initially called Blackwoodtown, prior to being settled by its first Europeans in 1750. John Blackwood was one of the first to settle in the area known as the head of Timber Creek. He immigrated from Scotland and had the occupation of fulling.

In 1891, the Camden County Railroad arrived in the area and increased development. From 1891 until 1932, the community was a summer resort town. 

Historical Landmark

Along Church Street, beginning at East Railroad Avenue, including Black Horse Pike, Indiana Avenue, and Central Avenue, is the town's Historic District. Among the buildings and properties listed in the register is the Solomon Wesley United Methodist Church. The church is located on Davistown Road and was built in 1850.

Four acres of land were purchases by Solomon Davis in 1813 for the sum of $10.00. Many of the Davis descendants were buried in the cemetery that is adjacent to the church. Additionally, visitors can find many United States Colored Troops veteran's graves today on the grounds.

Neighborhood

Most of the community's businesses and restaurants are found along South Black Horse Pike. Some of the dining options available include:

Education

The public schools in the area are part of the Gloucester Township Public Schools district and include:

  • Blackwood Elementary School

The community is home to Pennco Tech and Camden County College for the residents seeking higher education. Pennco Tech was founded in 1973 and offers programs such as:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Electrician
  • Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
  • Medical Assistant
  • Pharmacy Technician

In 1967, Camden County College was established, and offers the following degree programs, in addition to many others:

  • Film and Television Production
  • Paralegal Studies

Demographics

There were 4,545 residents in 2010. They made up the 1,687 households and 1,210 families within the 1,800 housing units within the neighborhood. The breakdown of the ethnicities was as followed:

  • 5.94% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.04% Native American
  • 2.53% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 1.63% other races
  • 1.87% two or more races

Within the community, the median income per household was $49,707, while the income median for a family was $60,136. Men had an average income of $41,274, as women brought in an annual income of $30,677. The most frequently held professions included:
