Broadway

The neighborhood of Broadway is located in the North Ward of Newark within Essex County in New Jersey. The community lies on the eastern edge of the Passaic River. It stretches from as far north as Belleville Township to as far south as Interstate 280, also known as the Essex Freeway. The nearby communities or neighborhoods within the area are Woodside, Forrest Hill, Mt Pleasant, Roseville, Silverlake, and Kearny. 

History

The neighborhood received its name based on the main thoroughfare, Broadway, which runs north and south through the town. Originally the road was called Washington Avenue until it was changed in the early 20th century. 

Within the community is Ahavas Sholom, the oldest functioning synagogue within Newark. The congregation was founded in 1905 in a building across from its current location. Before the building was constructed, services were held in the home of Ada and Leopold Jacobson, Eastern European immigrants. As the Jewish community grew, the area became home to as many as forty synagogues. The current building located on Broadway was built sometime around 1922. The ark was brought in from another location and dated back to the 1870s. The ark is now the oldest in the state of New Jersey. The Jewish Museum of New Jersey is located within the synagogue on the second floor.
