John Campbell founded a sawmill along Deep Run, part of the Great Egg Harbor River system. Campbell also opened the Ye Olde Midway Inn, a tavern, in 1779. Early settlers came into the area for its rich soil and built many farms. Businesses like Comar and Wilmad Glass were successful at fueling its economy.
