Carmel is an unincorporated community located within the Township of Deerfield in Cumberland County, New Jersey. The town's center is made up of the intersection of Nabb Avenue, Irving Avenue, and Carmel Road. Rosenhayn is to the north of the neighborhood, while Millville is to the south. Bridgeton is to the West, and Vineland is to the east.
The early settlers in the area were Russian Jewish farmers as far back as 1882. The Montefiore Agricultural Aid Society, MAAS, aided the community with needs like farming equipment. By 1889 the community had grown to 286 residents that consisted of 30 households. The farms took up 864 acres of the area, of which Jewish colonists occupied 848. Common crops in the area were:
In the winter months, the farmers worked either in their homes as tailors or in the factories. In 1900 the neighborhood consisted of 89 Jewish families that made up 471 residents. These families owned 1,029 acres that included 113 acres of fruit farming, 504 acres for produce and the remaining was for pastures. Many tailoring factories were built to accommodate the employers, such as the Carmel Industrial Co-operative owned by Mr. Miller. Unfortunately, a shortage of cloth and the high cost of transportation forced some of these to close during World War I.
The community is still home to the Beth Hillel Synagogue, built in 1901 and in 1978 was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Jewish Synagogue serves the Jewish communities of the Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester, and Cape May Counties.
A farm owned by Kenneth Sheppard converted some of his land into a bussing service for charter and school busses in 1952. The company now leases over 600 school vehicles in the state.
The community is a diverse neighborhood. English is the language spoken by the majority of the town's residents, but 5.7% speak Spanish as well. The following is a breakdown of the ancestral makeup of the community:
The annual income median for the greater area of the Deerfield Township was $68,571, while the family income was $73,566. The occupations held by the working residents can be broken down as follows:
