The History of Cedar Grove, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Cedar Grove, NJ at NJ Injury Guys have sponsored the following article about the neighborhood's history.

Cedar Grove

The township of Cedar Grove is situated in the northern section of Essex County in the state of New Jersey. The 2,790.4-acre township has 76.8 acres of water, including the Cedar Grove Reservoir, located off Ridge Road and Reservoir Drive. The neighboring towns include Little Falls, Great Notch, North Caldwell, and Singac. The main roadways that travel through the town are Pompton Avenue, Grove Avenue, Bradford Avenue, Ridge Road, and Fairview Avenue.

History

The area was once part of the Horsenect Tract, which was named due to its shape that resembled a horse's head and neck. The 14,000-acre tract also included the following areas:

  • Caldwell
  • West Caldwell
  • North Caldwell
  • Fairfield
  • Verona
  • Essex Fells
  • Roseland
  • portions of Livingston
  • West Orange

Early European settlers purchased the tract from the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe in exchange for goods that equaled $325. The area that came to be the present-day Cedar Grove was a farm town. Overbrook, a mental institution, was built in the area in 1896. In 1908 it was officially incorporated into a township. By the 1950s to 1960s, the community was a suburban destination for those escaping city life.

Neighborhood

In 1968, the Cedar Grove Historical Society was founded and led by Leslie Jacobus. They were left the Canfield Morgan House by the last farm owner and have since set up a museum to showcase the township's history. The house was built in 1845 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Along with the museum, the society operates an organic farm stand that is open each Saturday. Residents can look forward to purchasing organically grown vegetables and local honey in addition to local history books.

The township has many parks and green spaces for residents to enjoy. Some of these include:

  • Mills Reservation County Park
  • Cedar Grove Park
  • Hilltop Reservation
  • George Street Park
