An Abridged History of Cedarcroft, NJ

The workers' comp attorneys in Cedarcroft, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys would like to present some historical details about the waterfront neighborhood.

Cedarcroft

The unincorporated community sits within Brick Township in Ocean City, New Jersey. The community is bordered by water on the north and south,  namely the Metedeconk River and the Beaverdam Creek. The nearby communities include Arrowhead Village, Adamston, and Bayhead. Princeton Avenue travels through the center of the town.

History

The oldest section of the community, located on the south end of Princeton Avenue, was developed in the 1930s. The town is full of streets giving homage to the Natives that once dwelled within the area, including:

  • Seminole Lane
  • Osage Drive
  • Seneca Court
  • Arrowhead Drive
  • Cayuga Lane
  • Cherokee  Lane
  • Iroquois  Drive

The name was a derivative of Croft Land, a Scottish term meaning Land of Superior Quality, added to the ample red cedars that grow throughout the area.

Some of the early landowners included Mr. and Mrs. John Vreeland, who bought land from the Pine Shores Corporation in 1941. Joseph and Katherine Jomo purchased their land on Cedarcroft Drive from Mr. and Mrs. John Vreeland in 1946.

John G. W. Havens purchased land in 1853. Havens would serve from 1872 to 1875 as Ocean County's State Senator.

Neighborhood

Within the community is the Cedarcroft Club. The Club was established and designed by Joseph Jomo. It was incorporated in 1940 to promote a way to protect the best interest of the residents within the waterfront community. With the help of his wife, Katherine Jomo, they stuck with the cottage-style design for the homes. The fireplaces were constructed using local fieldstone in addition to the decorative wall next to the front door of each of the homes. These ornamental walls can still be seen throughout the neighborhood.
