Discovering Clayton, NJ

The dog bite lawyers in Clayton, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys offer some interesting facts and details regarding the neighborhood.

The borough of Clayton is situated in Gloucester County in the state of New Jersey. The community takes up 4,646.4 acres and includes 115.2 acres of water. In 1730, immigrants from Suisenlin, Switzerland, boarded a ship toward the New World. Felix and Barbara Fisler left their country for a new beginning with their two daughters and two sons. Their son, Jacob Fisler, purchased 6,500 acres of land in the area following the American Revolutionary War. The settlement was referred to as Fislertown, and by 1812 it had grown to 36 families. One of Fisler's descendants established a glassworks factory which led to the rapid growth of Fislertown.

The borough was created by an act of the state legislature on May 9, 1887, taking land from Clayton Township. The borough absorbed the remainder of Clayton Township on April 14, 1908, and that township was dissolved.

Historical Landmarks

The Clayton Historical Museum, located on East Avenue, was established by the members of the Historic Society of the borough. The museum includes many historical glass pieces as well as Revolutionary War memorabilia.

Just off of East Linden Street is the historical Clevenger Brothers Glass Works. The Clevenger brothers established their own company in 1912. Many of the glassworks factories had begun to close due to automatic bottle blowing machines. The brothers still used the old ways of producing the early glassware by free blowing.
