Clifton

The city of Clifton is located in Passaic County in New Jersey. It is located 12.2 miles north of Newark and 16.9 miles northwest of Manhattan, New York. The main roads that run through the town are the Garden State Parkway, NJ Route 3, and US 46.

History

The area was initially lead by Captahem, a Native American. He gave 11,000 acres to Hans Frederick. The town was named after the Garrett Mountain cliffs that border the northwestern section of the area. A lookout parking section has been constructed for visitors to enjoy.

The area was mainly used for agriculture and, in 1903, became the home to the U. S. Animal Quarantine Station. The station would serve as a primary location for the East Coast and would regulate the following incoming foreign animals being brought into the United States:

The station closed in the late 1970s and has since become home to the Clifton Arts Center Gallery and Studio and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
