Colwick

The community of Colwick is situated in the northern region of the township of Cherry Hill in Camden County, New Jersey. It is north of Church Road and south of Maple Avenue. Some of the nearby communities include Maple Shade, Cherry Hill Estates, Ramblewood, and Merchantville. A branch of the Pennsauken Creek flows along the eastern border.

History

The community's early days included the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans that coexisted with the English settlers, early followers of William Penn, the Quaker. The Europeans arrived in the late 1600s and by 1695 were forming agricultural towns. 

These communities grew through the 20th century and continued to expand after World War I. It was during the 1920s that the neighborhood was developed near the borders of Maple Shade and Pennsauken. Many brick homes were constructed along the streets, similar to the popular tract housing in the area. 

Neighborhood

Many of the community's current real estate was build between 1940 and 1950. Home prices average $248,852, which is less expensive than 47.9% of all neighborhoods in the United States and less than 80.2% within the state. Rent averages $2,096, which is lower in price than 61.6% of other neighborhoods in the state.  There is a good mix of both renters and owners within the community. 

Along Maple Avenue, there are many dining options for the residents. Some of these include:

  • Tortilla Press Cantina
  • Hing Far Chinese Restaurant
  • Go Stir Fry Express
  • House of Pizza

The schools that residents attend are part of the Cherry Hill School District. Some of the schools they attend include:

  • Thomas Paine Elementary School - located on Church Road
  • John A. Carusi Middle School - located on Roosevelt Drive
  • Cherry Hill High School West - located on Chapel Avenue

Demographics

As many as 13.6% of the townspeople were born outside of the United States. They primarily speak English, approximately 79.4%, but other languages are spoken include Spanish, Urdu (the national language of Pakistan), and Chinese. Residents in the neighborhood most commonly identify their ethnicity or ancestry as the following:

  • 22.3% Irish
  • 16.8% German
  • 13.1% Italian
  • 10.5% Polish
  • 9.9% English

The community's working population has a different mix of occupations represented, such as the following:

  • 33.8% executive, management, and professional occupations
  • 27.1% sales and service job
  • 25.4% manufacturing and laborer occupations
  • 12.9% clerical, assistant, and tech support occupations
