Early settlements began in 1725, with people from the Fairfield district moving into the area. It was incorporated as a precinct in 1748 and again as a township in 1798. It was named after a community in Massachusetts. In 1845, portions of land were taken by Bridgeton Township, and in 1922 portions were taken for Upper Deerfield Township. The Terro Nonno Winery is located on Garrison Road. This family-owned and operated farm began in the early 1900s, but the vineyard was planted in 2014. The founder, Adamo Natale Pipitone, moved into the area from Sicily, Italy. The farmland has been passed down generations, and the name Terro Nonna translates to grandfather's land.

The third winery was Southwind Vineyard & Winery, located on Lebanon Road. The winery recently closed but originally opened over 40 years ago. The family-owned business offered wine tasting tours along with horseback riding. The owner, Lorre Allen, had a French flair and a love for horses. At one point, yoga sessions even took place on the property.
