Delawanna

The neighborhood Delawanna is located 8.9 miles north of Newark and just under a 45-minute drive from Jersey City. Passaic Avenue runs through the heart of the neighborhood, and Kingsland Road makes up the southern border. The eastern border is created by the Passaic River, which runs 80 miles and ends in Newark Bay.

History

Delawanna helps make up the town of Clifton, along with the following additional neighborhoods:

  • Allwood
  • Athenia

The area is over a century old, with settlements dating back to 1679. Hans Frederick was given the area from Captahem, a Native American leader. The area was mainly farmlands until the introduction of the railroad. On September 12, 1870, the Delawanna Station was opened for service freight transport of the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad's Boonton Branch. Passenger service would not begin until December 14, 1870.

The Delewanna Station, located on Delawanna Avenue and Oak Street, was restored in 1925, and the tracks were raised throughout Clifton. Unfortunately, this building was torn down in 1970 due to neglect. Its current station has a shelter on the inbound side and two low-level platforms. It serves trains on the New Jersey Transit's Main Line.
