The borough of Edgewater is situated in the southeastern section of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. The narrow 1,574.4-acre borough sits on the edge of 3.5 miles of the Hudson River. A ferry service was established in 1758 by Etienne Burdett. The ferry service played an integral part during the Revolutionary War. It offered a continuous link for supplies, information, and transportation between Fort Lee and Fort Washington. After the war ended, the area converted into a resort town, and many large hotels were constructed. The ferry service continued to supply items across the river, including the cobblestones that paved the streets in Manhattan.
