Egg Harbor Township

Egg Harbor Township is located in the southeastern region of Atlantic County, New Jersey. The Atlantic City International Airport is located with the township. The main roadways are the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway.

History

The area was initially known as New Weymouth, but in 1761 it was renamed Great Egg-Harbour Township. After the Royal Charter rezoned many sections of the town to develop other areas, like Galloway Township, the official boundaries were finalized, and it was incorporated in 1798. The town was named after its abundance of waterfowl and shorebird eggs by Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. Mey arrived in the area in 1614 and, while touring the area, saw the meadows were full of eggs.

Neighborhood

This coastal town is the 35th largest in the state and has a low crime rate. The average household income is $52,550, which is low for the state but not for the country. As many as 31.16% have a bachelor's degree or higher. The occupational makeup of the adult residents is the following:

  • 9.83% office, technical, and administrative support

Parks and Recreation

Within the town is a wildlife management area called the Malibu Beach WMA. It is located with the marshlands between Broad Thorofare and the Great Egg Harbor Bay and covered 95.7 acres. This area is home to many species of birds, including migratory species that come during the spring and fall. Two other WMAs are Pork Island WMA and the Lester G. MacNamara WMA, formerly known as Tuckahoe WMA.

The area is home to many golf course that includes the following:

  • Twisted Dunes Golf Club
  • McCullough's Emerald Golf Links
  • Harbor Pines Golf Club

Storybook Land is another fun recreational amusement park. The park was established in 1955 and offers hands-on experiences related to nursery rhymes. Some of the rides included are:

  • Bubbles the Coaster
  • Tick-Tock Clock Drop
  • Beanstalk Bounce

Some of the attractions relating to nursery rhymes include:

  • Old Women in the Shoe
  • Jack and Jill Slide
  • Three Bears' House

Demographics

Egg Harbor Township's population in 2010 was 43,323, which was an increase of 41% from 2000. This total included 15,250 households and 11,316 families. Of the households, 36.5% had children under 18, but only 1% were married couples that lived together. Approximately 15.96% of the area's population was born outside of the United States. English is the most commonly spoken language, but Spanish and the languages of India are spoken too. The racial breakdown of the neighborhood was the following:

  • 79.42% white

  • 6.76% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.21% Native American
  • 5.05% Asian
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
