The area was initially known as New Weymouth, but in 1761 it was renamed Great Egg-Harbour Township. After the Royal Charter rezoned many sections of the town to develop other areas, like Galloway Township, the official boundaries were finalized, and it was incorporated in 1798. The town was named after its abundance of waterfowl and shorebird eggs by Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen Mey.
