A Brief History of Elberon, NJ

The personal injury lawyers in Elberon, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys would like to share some history on the community.

Elberon

The unincorporated community of Elberon is situated in Long Branch in Monmouth County in the state of New Jersey. The area falls under the ZIP code 07740. The coastal community is surrounded by Deal Park, Oakhurst, Wertheim's Corner, Deal, and West End. The main roadways within the neighborhood include Ocean Avenue, Roosevelt Avenue, Cedar Avenue, and Park Avenue.

History

The community is named after L. B. Brown, one of its founders. In the late 18th century, it was a beach resort town, home to many theatrical performances, making it the eastern Hollywood. An oceanfront park, called the Seven Presidents Park, was named in honor of the many United States Presidents that visited the area, including:

  • Ulysses S. Grant
  • Rutherford B. Hayes
  • James A. Garfield
  • Chester A. Arthur
  • Benjamin Harrison
  • William McKinley
  • Woodrow Wilson

These Presidents all worshiped at the Episcopal chapel, the Church of the Presidents, located on Ocean Avenue. Unfortunately, the building is not open for touring as it is being renovated, but it served as the summer resort church for more than 75 years. Other churches in the area include:

  • St. Stepanos Armenian Church
  • Elberon Memorial Church
  • Temple Beth Miriam-Reform
  • Ohel Simha Synagogue

Following the attempted assassination of former United States President James A. Garfield, a house was built, the Garfield Tea House. The oceanfront cottage was built out of the very railroad ties that were used to transport the ill president to his last place of residence. He had frequented the area often, and after being shot and the bullet being lodged behind his pancreas, others had hoped the quiet atmosphere and fresh air would help him heal. However, he died just twelve days after arriving.

Neighborhood

The community has a lot to offer its residents, including Elberon Park, located off of Melden Avenue just next to the George L. Catrambone School. The Breakwater Beach Club is a private beach club that offers the residents access to an elite club of recreational, pleasure, or social gatherings, such as the 4.5-acre Bimini Beach.
