A Brief History of Glen Rock, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Glen Rock, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys have shared some of the town's history for your reading enjoyment.

Glen Rock

The Glen Rock borough is situated in the western region of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. It covers a span of 1,740.8 acres and includes 64 acres of water, such as Diamond Brook. Lincoln Avenue forms the western border as Saddle River flows along the eastern edge. Ridgewood, Radburn, Fair Lawn, Hawthorne, and Midland Park are all neighborhoods that are close by.

History

On September 14, 1894, the borough was officially established, taking land from Ridgewood Township and Saddle River Township. The main goal of the residents was to allow the students to attend a local school rather than the one located at Rock Road and Ackerman Avenue. Initially, the area was referred to as South Ridgewood, but it was quickly changed to prevent any confusion.

The community was built around a large boulder within a small valley, hence its name. The boulder, estimated to weigh 570 short tons, is located at the intersection of Rock Road and Doremus Avenue. It is believed to have been placed in the position by a glacier approximately 15,000 years ago. The natives used it as a trail marker and referred to it as Pamachapuka or stone from heaven.

Neighborhood

In 2018, the borough was ranked as the 19th best place to live, according to Niche. The community is known for its high property values, great schools, and low crime rates.

The area is home to many great parks and reserves, such as:

  • Glen Rock Area Playground - located on Alan Avenue
  • Sycamore Park - located on Sycamore Terrace
  • Thielke Arboretum - located on Doremus Avenue
  • Diamond Brook Park - located off of Main Street
  • Wilde Memorial Park - located on Maple Avenue

The Thielke Arboretum is a wetland forest across 11-acres. An antique gazebo is located in the natural area. The reserve is a host to many different species of trees and plants. In addition to guided nature tours, the arboretum has the following:

  • gardens
  • nature trails
  • a spring-fed pond
  • a sparkling brook
