Guttenberg

Located within the northern region of Hudson County, New Jersey, is the town Guttenberg. The 153.6-acre town is only four blocks wide and is the 9th smallest municipality in New Jersey, and is one of the most densely populated in the county and worldwide. It lies just south of Woodcliff and north of West New York. The Hudson River forms its eastern border, and John F. Kennedy Boulevard runs along its western edge. 

History

The area initially was a farm that belonged to William Cooper. Cooper sold the land to the founders of the Weehawken Land and Ferry Association from New York. The property was divided into lots and sold to predominantly German buyers. The town was officially formed in 1859, taking land from the North Bergen Township. In 1861 it became a part of the Union Township but in 1878 became an independent municipality. It was named after the inventor of Europe's version of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg. Although some say it came from the Germans, translating a good village.  

Neighborhood

The area was built upon the Hudson Palisades. This line of steep cliffs overlooks the Hudson River. The cliffs vary in height and can be as low as 300 feet to as high as 540 feet. The Galaxy Towers were constructed in 1976 just across River Road from the cliffs. These apartments turned condominiums consist of three octagon skyscrapers that reach up to 415 feet tall. They were designed by Gruzen & Partners for Prudential Insurance Company, and in 2010 they were the home of one-fifth of the town's population. 

Schools that the residents attend include:

  • Anna L. Klein Elementary School
  • North Bergen High School
  • Hackensack University Medical Center

Demographics

According to the census taken in 2010, the neighborhood's population was 11,176. This consisted of 4,473 households and 2,684 families. Although the town saw a drastic 30.7% increase in population from 1990 to 2000, it only increased by 3.4% from 2000 to 2010. The racial makeup of its citizens was the following:

  • 67.44% white
  • 4.80% African American
  • 64.83% Hispanic or Latino
  • 7.32% Asian
  • 0.91% Native American
  • 0.04% Pacific Islander
  • 14.25% other races
  • 5.23% two or more races

The median household income for the area was $49,981. This was an increase from $44,515 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the employed residents is the following:

  • 12.77% office and administrative support 
  • 9.98% service and sales
  • 8.77% business and financial occupations

As many as 54.52% of the town's residents were born outside of the United States. The most common language spoke in the area is Spanish, followed by English, and some even speak the Languages of India. Ancestries that the residents identify with include:

  • Hispanic or Latino
  • Asian
  • German
  • Irish
  • Hungarian
  • Italian
  • English
