An Overview of the History of Hamilton, NJ

The car accident lawyers in Hamilton, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys would like to showcase the township's history and charm.

Hamilton

The township of Hamilton is located in the center of Atlantic County in New Jersey. The township has the state's largest land area of any municipality. It has 72,281.6 acres of both land and water, with 1,312 acres of water, such as Lake Lenape. Some of the closest communities include Mays Landing, Elwood, Estell Manor, Egg Harbor City, and Galloway.

History

The community was the home of a shipyard and trading post built by George May in 1756. The neighborhood, Mays Landing, was named in his honor, and by the middle of the 19th century, the shipyard was producing mass quantities of ships. More than 200 were constructed along the Great Harbor River from 1830 to 1880. The ships were built using wood from the native forests and iron produced at the Weymouth foundries. Unfortunately, wood shipbuilding declined by the end of the century due to limited timber and was replaced by iron hull construction.

Neighborhood

The township is home to the 527-acre Balic Winery, located off of Harding Highway in the Mays Landing section of the township. In the early 19th century, descendants of the early settlers began planting the vineyard. The winery opened in 1966 and is the third-oldest operating winery in the state, following Renault Winery and Tomasello Winery. The Balic Winery is considered one of the largest in the state and was named after its founder, Savo Balic. It produces over 27 variations of wine made from the following ingredients:

  • almonds
  • blackberries
  • cherries
  • mangoes
  • raspberries

Parks and Recreation

The township has many parks for the residents to enjoy, including Lake Lenape Park East and West along the Lake Lenape in the southern region of the town. Lake Lenape East recently closed for renovations and includes a historic lighthouse and the catering hall, Lakeside Manor. The venue can hold up to 250 guests and offers the perfect backdrop for a lakeside wedding. Other amenities include:

  • Pavilions
  • Picnic Tables
  • Rest Rooms
