The History of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ at NJ Injury Guys present the following article about the town's history.

Hasbrouck Heights

Hasbrouck Heights is a 979.2-acre borough situated in the southern region of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. The borough is located north of Wood-Ridge, west of Teterboro, and south of Hackensack. New Jersey 17 travels north and south along the town's eastern edge, separating it from the Teterboro Airport.

History

The community was formerly known as Corona, and its first European settlers arrived in 1664. It would not become Hasbrouck Heights until 1889, honoring the general manager of the New Jersey and New York Railroad, Jacob Dillon Hasbrouck. The name change was to distinguish itself from the Queens neighborhood. It was officially incorporated as a borough in 1894 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature and borrowed land from Lodi Township.

With the proximity to the Teterboro Airport, it is no wonder that a few incidents have arisen within the neighborhood, such as:

  • 1935 - A small biplane crashed onto Route 2 due to losing altitude.
  • 1966 - A Piper Aztec twin-engine plane piloted by  James P. Scott crashed on a lawn on Burton Avenue after losing an engine.
  • 1999 - A Beechcraft Baron crashed in a residential backyard as it was bound for Virginia.

It also was the setting for an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee featuring Jerry Seinfeld.
