The History of Herbertsville, NJ

The worker's comp attorneys in Herbertsville, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys, invite you to learn more about the area's history.

Herbertsville

The unincorporated community of Herbertsville is located in the northern section of Brick Township, in Ocean County, New Jersey. The neighborhood is 62.3 miles south of New York City and 39.8 miles east of Trenton, New Jersey. The main roadways in the town are Herbertsville and Lanes Mill Road. The Manasquan River forms the eastern border, and Sawmill Creek forms the southern edge.

History

Before the town became home to the European settlers, the American Indian Lenape Tribe resided in the area. Many artifacts have been found along the Manasquan River that dates back to this time. It is said that due to the natives migrating west, they were completely gone by the 1730s.

In 1802 Issac Herbert, the community was named, purchased land and a house in the area. Brick Township, which includes the present-day Herbertsville, was incorporated in 1850 and named after Joseph W. Brick, owner of Bergen Iron Works. Other types of industries that began to take over the area included the following:

  • lumber
  • pinewood
  • cranberry
  • poultry

More industries came in the 1900s, like Park & Tilford's Laurelton Farms, and the land development began. By the 1950s, the area was a quiet resort town. However, the Garden State Parkway completion brought an influx of people looking to get away from city life. As the population grew, so did the area. General stores were torn down to make room for larger department stores and supermarkets, creating the suburban neighborhood is it now.

Historical Landmarks

Despite the town's rapid growth, one place has held on to the historical elements, the Havens Homestead Museum. Located on Herbertsville Road, Havens Farm is home to the museum and the Lizzie Herbert House. The buildings and their interiors have been preserved to display life as it was during the mid-1800s. The homes were built in 1827, and additions were made to the main building in 1847. Other historic structures located on the property include:

  • a barn
  • cranberry shed
  • fishing shack

The Lizzie Herbert House was actually constructed on another site but moved onto the Haven Farm property in 2001. The original owners were Abram and Mary Woolley Herbert, but the name was named after their daughter, Emma Elizabeth. Lizzie was born in the house in 1903 and had four siblings.

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is home to predominantly upper-middle income households. Many of the residents travel as far as 30 minutes each way to their place of employment. The occupational breakdown of its population is the following:

  • 38.6% executive, management, or professional roles
  • 25.1% sales or service jobs
  • 20.0% manufacturing or laborer occupations
  • 16.0% clerical, assistant, or technical support positions

Demographics

Even though 94.3% of the town's citizens speak English as their primary language, Spanish and Polish are also spoken. In fact, as many as 8.7% claim Polish as their first language. The ancestries that the residents identify can be broken down as the following:

  • 33.0% Italian
  • 26.8% Irish
  • 21.6% German
  • 11.1% English
  • 6.1% Polish
