Highland Park

The neighborhood of Highland Park helps form the city of Gloucester City in Camden County, New Jersey. Other communities in the city include Cloversdale, Gloucester Heights, and Newbold. Newton Creek flows across the northern border of the neighborhood. Crescent Boulevard and the North-South Freeway cross over each other in the center of the area. 


The Dutch used the region during the 17th century mostly as trading stations. For the majority of the 1620s, trade took place with the Native American tribes of the Susquehannock and Lenape peoples. The greater area was part of New Sweden from 1638-1655 and had been founded by Peter Minuit, the Director of New Netherland, who was also responsible for the purchase of the island of Manhattan.


The median real estate price in the neighborhood is $189,315, which is less expensive than 91.1% of other neighborhoods in the state. Rent averages $2,214 per month and is also lower than 61.7% of the other communities. The suburban neighborhood is made up of medium-sized single-family homes built between 1940 and 1969. There are a few apartment complexes, such as Highland Estates Cond Associates and River Pointe Apartment Homes. However, the residential real estate is primarily owner-occupied.

The Highland Park United Methodist, located on Highland Boulevard, was established in 1920.  

Johnson Park, located on South Johnson Boulevard, offers the residents many amenities for outdoor activities along Newton Creek. Some of these include:

  • several baseball & softball diamonds
  • a playground
  • a tennis courts
  • a walking trail


Residents in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade can attend the public schools part of the Gloucester City Public Schools. During the 2018-2019 school year, the three schools had an enrollment of 2,189 students and 173.5 classroom teachers. These schools, all located on Market street, included:

  • Cold Springs Elementary School - 850 students in grades PreK-3
  • Gloucester City Middle School - 780 students in grades 4-8
  • Gloucester City High School - 515 students in grades 9-12

They also have the option to attend the private Gloucester Catholic High School which is a co-educational four-year Roman Catholic high school, located on Ridgeway Street.


As many as 20.4% of its residents, five years old and above, speak Italian as their first language. English is spoken by 84.1% of households, while others speak Spanish and Polish. Many of the residents identify their ethnicity or ancestry as the following:

  • 32.0% Irish
  • 23.2% German
  • 15.7% Italian
  • 9.6% Mexican
  • 7.7% Asian

Most of the households are upper-middle income, making it an above-average income community. The working residents represent a different mix of occupations, such as: 

  • 35.8% manufacturing and laborer occupations
  • 30.5% executive, management, and professional roles
  • 23.6% sales and service jobs
  • 10.0% clerical, assistant, and tech support positions
