Hillcrest

Hillcrest is located within the largest city in Passaic County, New Jersey, Paterson. It is just outside the city's center, surrounded by Little Lima, Stoney Road, Haledon, Northside, and Totowa. Chamberlain Avenue, Central Avenue, and Union Avenue run across the neighborhood. 

History

Initially, the area was inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Native American Acquackanonk tribe of the Lenape nation. The greater area was known as Lenapehoking, which means homelands of the Lenape. The Dutch began settling into the area that became known as the New Netherlands. 

Beginning in the 19th century, the community became a melting pot for immigrants from many different countries, including:

  • German 
  • Syrian
  • Lebanese

By the 20th century, the African American population began to grow during the Great Migration. A house located just across the Passaic River off Bridge Street and Broadway was used as a station for the Underground Railroad. A memorial has since been added to the site. 

Neighborhood

This middle-class enclave is one of the most desirable neighborhoods within the largest city of Passaic County. The neighborhood has large Hispanic and Indian ancestry whose heritage can be found throughout the community. Some of these diverse establishments include:

The neighborhood had a population of 7,540 and contained 1,923 households. The racial makeup of the community's population was the following:

  • 12.9% white
  • 48.3% Hispanic or Latino
  • 22.9% African American
  • 15.4% Asian 
  • 0.4% other races

29.9% of the residents in the community were born in countries other than the United States. Spanish is the primary language spoken by 43.0% of the townspeople, followed by 38.4% that speak English. Some of the common ancestries found within the population include: 

  • 19.74% Puerto Rican
  • 19.6% South American
  • 16.7% Asian
  • 8.3% Dominican
  • 7.4% Italian

The median income of the community was $91,500. The unemployment rate for the area was 5.3%, and as many as 60.2% were employed. The breakdown of the most common occupations held by the residents includes: 

  • 21.9% administrative 
  • 15.2% sales 
  • 10.2% management
  • 9.1% production
  • 6.7% transportation
  • 6.5% construction
  • 4.7% facilities
