The Bloomfield township is located in the northeastern section of Essex County in New Jersey. It covers 3430.4 acres, of which 12.8 acres is water, such as Clark Pond and Third River located in the northern region near the Upper Montclair Country Club. The Garden State Parkway travels north and south through the center of the township.
The English Puritan colonists from Newark were the first to settle in the area. Thomas Cadmus was among the first Dutch to settle in the area during the mid-18th century. Cadmus was a businessman that became a Revolutionary War lieutenant colonel and eventually a leader in the Bloomfield community. He was baptized at the historical Reformed Church of Second River in Belleville.
In 1794, the Presbyterian Society of Bloomfield was formed and named in honor of Joseph Bloomfield. He was very active in the United States Army and played an integral part in the Whiskey Rebellion. He would later become the fourth Governor of the state of New Jersey. The town was named after him as well.
The area became a township in 1812 and was a prosperous farm town in the upper Brookdale region, while the southern area became more industrialized. Some major factories that started up in the area include:
During World War II, the area's resources were provided to the armed forces as the men served. However, after stricter regulations were enforced due to environmental concerns, many factories moved out of the area or shut down completely. Farms were replaced with residential suburban development and halted the population growth the area was seeing.
Located on Belleville Avenue is the Oakes Estate that now serves as the Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center. The estate was constructed in 1895 by Charles Granville for the Oakes Family. Thomas Oakes started the Oakes Woolen Mill that operated from 1830 to 1945.
Another historical landmark is Bloomfield College. This private college was founded in 1868 by the Presbyterian Church as a German Theological Seminary. The Westminster Art Center is located on the campus. Some of the athletics programs offered include:
Bloomfield's population was 47,315 per the 2010 census. This was a decrease of 0.8% from 2000. The population consisted of 18,387 households and 11,768 families. The racial makeup of the residents was the following:
