A Quick History of Harbortown, NJ

The slip and fall lawyers in Harbortown, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys, would like to share some of the area's history.

Harbortown

Harbortown is located within the Perth Amboy neighborhood in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is situated on the Arthur Kill and is south of the New Jersey 440 or Outerbridge Crossing toll road. The main roadways that run through the planned community include High Street, State Street, and New Brunswick Avenue.

History

The area used to be the classification or marshaling yard for the Lehigh Valley Railroads and then the Easton and Amboy Railroads. Coal would be loaded onto the train barges. In 1872 the LVRR bought the Perth Amboy and Bound Brook Railroad mainly due to its access to the New Jersey harbor. After the two merged, they formed the Easton and Amboy Railroad.

A tidewater terminal was constructed on the Arthur Kill and was used to transport coal to New York City across the waterway. As many as 350,000 tons of anthracite were transported from the harbor. Unfortunately, the railroad was forced into bankruptcy in 1976, and the area was converted into a residential suburb.

Neighborhood

Houses in the area are more expensive than 36.3% of other New Jersey neighborhoods, and the median price is $314,760. Rent is lower, however, and averages $2,154 per month. This coastal neighborhood is comprised mainly of renter-occupied small apartment buildings, mostly built before 1939.

Some of the community roads are lined with older architecture, such as that found on the St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church located on State Street.

Demographics

Approximately 48.3% of the town's people were born in countries other than the United States. As many as 84.5% speak Spanish while the rest speak English. The ancestral makeup of the community is the following:

  • 45.6% Dominican
  • 18.0% Puerto Rican
  • 10.3% Mexican
  • 2.5% Cuban
  • 2.3% South American

The area is home to lower-middle-income households, and as much as 34.3% are living below the poverty rate. The following occupations can break down the working population:

  • 48.9% manufacturing or laborer occupations
  • 19.0% sales or service jobs
  • 17.2% executive, management, or professional occupations
  • 14.9% clerical, assistant, or technical support roles
