Iselin

The unincorporated community of Iselin is found within the Woodbridge Township, situated in the northern region of Middlesex County, New Jersey. The community is also a census-designated place, or CDP, and takes up 2,041.6 acres and has an elevation of 30 feet. The closest neighbors include Oak Tree, Menlo Park, Colonia, Boynton Beach, Port Reading, and Hazelton. 

History

The community was named after Adrian Georg Iselin, a philanthropist and a New York investment banker. Adrian founded a finishing school for girls of wealthy families from the city in the 1870s. However, the community had previously gone by the names Perrytown and Unionville. 

Neighborhood

Within the community is Oak Tree Road, also known as Little India. The section runs approximately one-and-a-half miles through the community as well as in Edison, it's neighbor. The strip is a retail and dining district with a heavy population of South Asian Indian Americans. With over 400 businesses and more than 60 Indian-inspired restaurants, it is easy to see why it has received the nickname Little India. Some of these restaurants include:

The community hosts many festivals and parades to honor the Indian American heritage. Some of these include:

  • New Jersey India Day Parade - to celebrate Indian Independence Day
  • Ganesh Utsav - honoring the Hindu god Ganesha

The Shirdi Sai Cultural and Community Center is located on Lincoln Highway. It offers Hindus and Muslims a place for worship as well as serves the community. Many times during the year, it hosts Annadanam offering the community food, medical camps, and supplies for homeless shelters. 

Education

The community offers many options for residents to seek education on many levels. Some of these include:

  • John F. Kennedy Memorial High School
  • Academy for Continuing Professional Education
  • Iselin Middle School
  • Indiana Avenue Elementary School
  • Kennedy Park Elementary School

Demographics

The area had a population of 18,695 people in 2010, making up 6,445 households and 4,892 families. The makeup of races within the community was the following:

  • 41.47% white
  • 6.72% African American
  • 0.33% Native American
  • 7.12% Hispanic or Latino
  • 46.12% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 2.26% other races
  • 3.09% two or more races

The household income median was $65,424 in 2000. A family income averaged $71,913. Women averaged an annual income of $36,131 while men averaged $50,145. Common occupations included:
