The History of Laurel Springs, NJ

The dog bite attorneys in Laurel Springs, NJ at NJ Injury Guys would like to offer some interesting details about the area and its history for your reading pleasure.

Laurel Springs

Laurel Springs is a borough that takes up 294.4 acres of Camden County within the state of New Jersey. The neighboring communities include Stratford, Lindenwold, Clementon, and Kirkwood. Some of the roadways within the community include West Atlantic Avenue, Warwick Road, Lakeview Avenue, and Park Avenue.

History

One of the early Quaker settlers into the area was Joseph Tomlinson, from London, who settled in the area in 1686. The family became one of the prominent families in the early years of Camden County. Ephraim Tomlinson, Joseph's great-great-grandson, built a gristmill and sawmill in the community and later bought a mansion nearby. This area would become known as Laurel Mills but later, as it grew, would become Laurel Springs, after the therapeutic springs that flowed through the laurel groves. It would officially be incorporated into a borough in 1913.

Historical Landmarks

From 1876 to 1881, Walt Whitman made the area his summer retreat. He added on to his friend's house, which was close to Laurel Lake on Maple Avenue, and made it into the Whitman-Stafford House. Whitman, a poet, referred to the area as having the "prettiest lake" and wrote “Specimen Days” and parts of “Leaves of Grass” while spending his summers in the area. He was known to enjoy the springs by either bathing in them, drinking them, and sitting near them.

Neighborhood

In the southern region of the borough is Laurel Lake. The lake and its connecting streams are good sources for the following fish:

  • largemouth bass
  • bigmouth buffalo
  • blue catfish
  • white perch
  • pickerel

The Laurel Springs Recreational Center hosts the borough meetings and is a great venue to host events. It offers the guests the use of a full kitchen and tables. Nearby are the tennis courts and a fenced-in playground, also available for the residents to use. The Craig Leib Memorial Baseball Field sits behind the courts with access to restrooms.

Demographics

Per the census count in 2010, the borough had 1,908 residents that included 727 households and 506 families. This was a decrease from 2000 of 3.1%, following a decrease of 15.8% from 1990 to 2000. The racial makeup of the townspeople was the following:
