The borough of Lawnside is situated in the northern half of Camden County in New Jersey. The community takes up 915.2 acres of land. Abolitionists, namely Ralph Smith, purchased the land in 1840 to develop a community for freed and escaped slaves and other African Americans. It became known as "Snow Hill" and "Free Haven" before it was named after the train station constructed along the Atlantic City Railroad in 1907 by the Reading Railroad.
