All About Lincoln Park, NJ

The car accident attorneys in Lincoln Park, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys would like to share some of the highlights of the area's history.

Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park is a borough incorporated on March 11, 1922, that is located in the northern region of Morris County, New Jersey. This 4422.4-acre area is east of Towaco and north of Fairfield. Wayne Townships is separated on the eastern side by the Pompton River. Main Street, the Boonton Turnpike, Beaverbrook Road, and Pine Brook Road are some of its main roadways.

History

The borough was named after the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is part of Morris County that the Wisconsin Glacier covered from 23,000 BC to 13,000 BC. After the glacier melted in approximately 13,000 BC, the Paleo Indians dwelled on the land.

When the European settlers arrived in 1609, the Lenni-Lenape Native American tribes lived in the area. Henry Hudson led the Dutch exploration and founded the area before others arrived and surveyed the land. The Native Americans offered the settlers trades of fur and food for a variety of Dutch goods, such as the following:

  • metal pots
  • knives
  • guns
  • blankets
  • axes

The area was initially part of Burlington County before Morris County was formed in 1739. Land from Hunterdon County helped to create the area that eventually was ruled by the English. In the winter of 1777, the area was the site for winter camps of soldiers from the Continental Army after the Battle of Trenton and Princeton.

Historical Landmarks

Within the borough is the Lincoln Park History Museum, located on Main Street on the former Benjamin Estate. The building served as the first public library and was constructed in 1927. The new Lincoln Park Public Library is located on Route 202. The historic building is now a history museum and offers tours and even a virtual museum tour.

The museum site was the former Benjamin Estate that included the Terhune Benjamin House, a former mill and historic farm. The Terhune Benjamin House was constructed sometime before 1820 when it was sold to the Morris Canal Company by Albert Terhune. David Benjamin purchased the house and land in 1845. He used the falls along the canal to run his sawmill. Unfortunately, the house was torn down in 2018 to make way for residential development.

Demographics

As of the census taken in 2010, the town's population was 10,521 and consisted of 4,001 households and 2,593 families. This was a 3.7% decrease from the count taken in 2000 that resulted in 10,930. The racial makeup of the townspeople was the following:
