Longport

The coastal borough of Longport is located within Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. It is situated on the Atlantic Ocean shore of Absecon Island. The small inlet takes up 998.4 acres that include 74.49%, or 742.4 acres of water, leaving only 256 acres of land. Margate City and Ocean City are the closest communities. 

History

The name of the community was in honor of the first landowner, James Long. In 1857, Long purchased a parcel that grew as sand accumulated. He purchased additional land but, in 1882, sold the area to M. Simpson McCullough and it became known as Longport. The borough was incorporated on March 7, 1898. 

A series of storms that wrecked the borough between 1900 and 1916 washed out a section of 180 acres onto a barrier island. This section of land included the streets numbered from 10th Avenue and below. 

Neighborhood

The neighborhood can access the mainland by a series of causeways and bridges that include:

  • JFK Memorial Bridge
  • the Ocean City Bridge
  • the Dolores G. Cooper Bridge, also known as Longport-Somers Point Boulevard

Residents and guests alike can enjoy fun activities a the beach, such as surfing and other water sports. Also worth checking out is the local attraction, the Fishmonger Water Tower, located on Devon Avenue. 

There are many dining options along the beach, on the main strip of Ventnor Avenue. Some of the favorites include:

  • Johnny's Cafe & Lounge

Education

The schools in the borough are part of the Margate City School District. These include:

  • William H. Ross III Elementary School
  • Eugene A. Tighe Middle School
  • Ocean City High School
  • Atlantic City High School

If private education is more preferred, students can attend the Holy Spirit High School in Absecon. 

Demographics

The borough's population was 895 people in 2010. This was a decrease from the count of 1,054 in 2000. There were 470 households and 252 families within the community that had 1,656 housing units. The following is the racial makeup of the residents: 

  • 98.88% white 
  • 0.34% African American
  • 1.12% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.11% Native American
  • 0.45% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 0.11% other races
  • 0.11% two or more races

The community had a median income of $70,625 per household in 2010, which was an increase from $51,324 in 2000. Men averaged $72,143 per year, as women averaged $65,357. The top occupations filled by the employed residents included:

  • 19.34% management occupations
  • 17.13% sales jobs
  • 11.88% business and financial occupations
