Magnolia

The borough of Magnolia is situated in the central region of Camden County in the state of New Jersey. It covers 627.2 acres and sits at an elevation of 79 feet, or 24 meters. Some of the communities that share a border with the borough include Lawnside, Somerdale, Runnemede, Barrington, and Hi-Nella. North White Horse Pike travels through the community along with Evesham Road, East Atlantic Avenue, and Warwick Road. 

History

The borough was incorporated on April 14, 1915, taking land from Centre Township and parts of Clementon. Centre Township was a township from 1855 to 1926 before becoming defunct. The name of the borough originated from the magnolia trees that grow throughout the community. 

The community is home to the only existing single arch McDonald's sign in the state. Depending on your source, there are either seven or twelve across the country with the original sign that dates back to as early as 1940.  

In 1928, the borough inherited Albertson Park through the will of John J. Albertson. The park is next to Borough Hall and across from where he had lived. A gazebo was constructed in the park, along with a pavilion. Many community social events are held at the park, such as:

  • occasional concerts

Education

Children have the option to attend the public schools that are part of the Magnolia School District. Some of these schools include:

  • Sterling High School

  • Somerdale Park School

There are several places for the residents to attend a worship service, including the following:

  • Magnolia United Methodist Church
  • Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
  • New Mercies Deliverance Church
  • Mt. Olive Baptist Church
  • South Jersey Christian Fellowship

The borough counted 4,341 people, 1,710 households, and 1,147 families in 2010. The races within the population were broken down as follows:

  • 74.71% white 
  • 18.27% African American
  • 7.83% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.30% Native American
  • 1.89% Asian
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
  • 2.21% other races
  • 2.58% two or more races

In 2010, the median income per household within the borough was $53,125, and for a family income, the median was $74,042. Men averaged an annual income of $49,196, and women averaged $38,523 per year. Some of the commonly held professions included the following:
