A Closer Look at Margate City, NJ

The slip and fall attorneys in Margate City, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys, have provided the following informative article regarding the neighborhood.

Margate City

Margate City is located in the southern section of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. It is situated on Absecon Island, a barrier island on the Jersey Shore. The city takes up 1,043.2 acres and sits at an elevation of 7 feet. Neighboring communities include Longport, Ventnor Heights, Ventnor City, and Pork Island. Margate Boulevard connects the town to the inland communities.

History

The city was initially incorporated as a borough in 1885 under the name South Atlantic City and reincorporated as a city in 1897. In 1909, the area was renamed and reincorporated as Margate, after a town in Kent, England.

The Margate Log Cabin, located on Jerome Avenue, is an important historical landmark in the community. The local fire company established it as a meeting place in 1935. Wood was floated in from the Pine Barrens to build the cabin. Construction began in 1932, and by 1956, it was opened to the public for membership. The cabin is a private club that offers admittance to new members if an existing member sponsors them. Private fundraising events have kept the building preserved over the years.

Neighborhood

The city is home to the infamous Marven Gardens, known from the game Monopoly. The neighborhood is full of homes built during the 1920s and 1930s. The 16-acre neighborhood is currently the most expensive in the city and has some of the highest real estate prices in the state.

Another attraction within the community is a six-story wooden elephant structure. The elephant, known as Lucy the Elephant, was built out of wood and tin by the Irish-American inventor James V. Lafferty in 1881. Initially, the structure was designed to attract tourists in hopes of increasing real estate sales. It is the oldest roadside attraction still in existence in the United States.

Demographics

The community had 6,354 people, which made up 3,156 households and 1,805 families in 2010. This was a decrease of 22.4% from the count in 2000, following a decrease each year since 1970. The racial makeup of the town was the following:

  • 96.36% white
  • 0.71% African American
  • 2.75% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.09% Native American
  • 0.98% Asian
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 0.72% other races
  • 1.12% two or more races

The income median for the households within the city was $66,667 in 2010, which was an increase from  $45,876 in 2000. The top occupations held by the employed included:

  • 14.9% administrative
  • 14.8% sales
  • 12.4% management
  • 9.3% food service
  • 7.5% education
