Located in Bergen County, New Jersey, the Maywood borough consists of 1216 acres. It is west of Paterson by 8.1 miles taking Interstate 80. 


In 1894, the area split from the Midland Township and was officially incorporated as a borough. Its name would come from the New Jersey Midland Railway station located at 269 Maywood Avenue. The station switched owners in 1896 to the New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railroad. It would continue operating until 1966. In 2004, the station would be converted to a museum and open for public visiting.

Aside from the historical Maywood Station, Maywood is home to the following landmarks:

  • Oldis-Brinckerhoff House - built in the 1700s
  • Romine-Van Voorhis House - built in 1784
  • Maywood Public Library - built in 1951


In 2010 the population of Maywood was 9,555, consisting of 3,649 households and 2,591 families. Close to 28.24% of the borough's residents were born outside of the country. Most speak English, but a few speak Spanish and the Languages of India. The racial breakdown of the town is the following:

  • 74.78% white
  • 5.34% African Ameican
  • 18.68% Hispanic or Latino
  • 10.98% Asian
  • 0.18% Native American
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 6.16% other races
  • 2.54% two or more races

The area consists of a good mix of residents working in blue-collar and white-collar positions. As many as 37.37% possess a bachelor's degree or higher. The average household income was $82,792. The occupational breakdown of the area is is the following:

  • 14.9% sales or service positions
  • 14.31% office or administrative support 
  • 10.87% management or executive roles

The business district is on West Pleasant Avenue near the crossing of Lincoln and Maywood Avenues. The following are prominent business that helps to employ the residents:

  • The Outlets at Bergen Town Center (while most of this is in Paramus, a portion lies in the city limits of Maywood) 
  • Stepan Company- the only commercial manufacturer approved by the DEA to import coca leaves, they sell the inactive ingredients to Coke, but the active ingredients are sold to pharmaceutical firms for the production of medicine
  • Myron Corp - company headquarters are located in Maywood - a multinational company that makes promotional business items
