Meriden

The neighborhood of Meriden is located on the outskirts of Lake Telemark in the Rockaway Township. It is in Morris County in the northern region of the state of New Jersey. Some of the other nearby towns within the area are Lyonsville, Hibernia, Powerville, and White Meadow Lake. The waterways within the community are Beaver Brook, Dixons Pond, and the Splitrock Reservoir. 

Historical Landmark

Located in the northern section of the neighborhood is a massive 32-foot-tall stone furnace, known as the Splitrock or Cobb furnace. This historical landmark in the Splitrock Reservoir area was constructed in 1862 during the Civil War. It was the last charcoal-fired furnace built in the state. It consumed as much as one acre of woodland each day for its charcoal fuel and operated over a span of ten years. The original Splitrock tract covered 3,000 acres in the Farny State Park highlands and includes remnants of the following:

  • forges
  • mines
  • a village 

Neighborhood

The Splitrock Reservoir significantly impacts the greater community and supplies water to many parts of the state. It consists of 1,500 acres of wilderness along with a 650-acre reservoir used by the state. The reservoir has many large islands and is three miles long. On the southwest edge is a manufactured dam. The whole area opened to the public in 2003 and offers its visitors an all-natural environment for various activities like boating, hiking, and fishing. Some of the fish that residents have caught include:

  • bass
  • catfish
  • crappie
  • sunfish
  • perch
  • pickerel

Education

The public schools that the neighborhood children can attend are within the Rockaway Township School District and the Morris Hills Regional School District. Many students are enrolled at the schools such as:

  • Morris Knolls High School - located on Knoll Drive
  • Copeland Middle School - located on Lake Shore Drive
  • Katharine D Malone Elementary School - located on Green Pond Road

The households within the neighborhood are mostly wealthy, and it has a higher income than 93.4% of other neighborhoods in America. The employed adults represent a mix of occupations that include:
