Metuchen

The borough of Metuchen is located in the northern section of Middlesex County, in the state of New Jersey. The borough spans 1,824 acres and contains 0.07% water, such as the pond in Thomas Park. The neighboring communities are Edison, Menlo Park, Fords, Clara Barton, and Iselin. The main roadways that run through the borough are Essex Avenue, New Durham Road, Main Street, and Grove Avenue. 

History

The community belonged to the Raritan people that helped make up the Lenape Native Americans. As far back as 1646, the leader and chief, Matouchin, led a group of 1,200 warriors. 

The town was initially part of the Woodbridge Township until it seceded and became its own identity in 1870. It officially formed a borough in 1900. It became the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen seat in 1981, including Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset, and Warren counties.

Neighborhood

Along Main Street, the residents and guests alike can find a great assortment of dining options. Some of these include:

The borough had 13,574 residents living within its borders in 2010. This total contained 5,243 households and 3,744 families within 5,440 housing units. The racial breakdown of the community was the following:

  • 4.88% African American
  • 0.07% Native American
  • 6.89% Hispanic or Latino
  • 12.96% Asian
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 1.39% other races
  • 2.76% two or more races

The income average per household was $94,410 in 2010, and for a family was $126,123. Men averaged a yearly income of $78,974, as the women in the borough averaged $57,271 per year. The top occupations held by the working adults included:
