A Historic Look at Millville, NJ

The workers' comp lawyers in Millville, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys would like to share some interesting facts and features about the community.

Millville

The city of Millville is situated in the central region of Cumberland County, in the state of New Jersey. It takes up 28,480 acres, of which 5.62% or 1,600 acres is water, such as Union Lake, Maurice River, White Marsh Run, and Buckshutem Creek. Some communities that share a border with the city are Deerfield, South Vineland, Cumberland, Fairfield, Laurel Lake, and Carmel.

History

In the early days of the community around 1720, it was home to Leaming's Mill, which had a sawmill known as Shingle Landing. Henry Drinker and Joseph Smith purchased 24,000 acres in 1790, and this area was referred to as the Union Mills Tract. They established the lumber mill, Union Estates Company, on the Maurice River. They constructed a dam on the river to power the mill. An American Revolutionary War veteran, Joseph Buck, bought land in the area and surveyed the plans for the neighborhood development in 1795. Buck served under General George Washington during the war.

Some of the influential businesses that resided in the city included:

  • 1806 - a glass factory - owned by James Lee, an Irish immigrant
  • the early 1850s - the Smith and Wood Iron Foundry and New Jersey Mills - David Wood aided in the construction of the dam that powered the mill
  • 1936 - Roosevelt Park - an elderly housing development
  • 1941 - the Millville Airport

Historical Landmark

The Millville Army Air Field opened in January of 1943 as a gunnery school for fighter pilots. In the beginning, training was with Curtiss P-40 Warhawk aircraft but changed over to the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt after a few weeks. The school was open for three years and served both soldiers and civilians, with approximately 1,500 pilots receiving fighter training.

The airfield shut down after World War II ended due to government budget restraints. Many of the buildings were transitioned into apartments, but they were removed by the early 1970s and replaced as an aviation and industry hub.

Today, a museum seeks to honor the history and share the importance the airport had on the country. It is home to the Millville Army Air Field Museum and Air Show as well.
