Monroe

The township of Monroe is situated in the southeastern section of Gloucester County in the state of New Jersey. The township spans 30,035.2 acres, of which 1.08% is water. This 326.4 acres of water includes Timber, Victory, Sunset, Spruce, and Diamond Lakes. Additionally, it also includes Hospitality Branch, Faraway Branch, and Whitehall Branch. Some of the neighboring communities include Franklin, Folsom, Cedar Lake, Glassboro, and Clayton.  

History 

The township was incorporated in March of 1859, taking land from Washington Township. It changed from Camden County to Gloucester in 1871 in addition to much of Washington Township. However, portions of the township shifted to Winslow Township in Camden County in 1950. The community was named in honor of the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe. Monroe served from 1817 until 1825, and his presidency was often referred to as the Era of Good Feelings. 

Neighborhood

The township is home to two wineries, including Blue Cork Winery and Vineyard and Autumn Lake Winery. The Blue Cork Winery and Vineyard was founded by the Tantaros family in 2012 when they purchased the land. They began to plant the vineyard in 2014 and added their second set two years later in 2016. The family incorporates their Greek heritage into their winemaking and cultivating. At the young age of 20, Angelo Tantaros left his family's vineyard in Greece to pursue his dream in America. 

Autumn Lake Winery sits on 115 acres which includes 9 acres of vineyard. They began to plant their vineyard in 2012 and opened for business in 2014. They host many events on their property in addition to wine tastings and bonfires. Some of the recent events include:

Demographics

The township had a population of 36,129 as of 2010, which made up 12,815 households and 9,445 families within 13,387 housing units. The makeup of the resident's races was the following:

  • 79.41% white 
  • 14.01% African American
  • 4.97% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.20% Native American
  • 2.42% Asian
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 1.54% other races
  • 2.41% two or multiple races

The neighborhood's median income was $50,037 per household and $56,810 per family. Men averaged an income of $41,062 while women were substantially lower at $29,849 per year. The common professions held by the working population was the following:
