Neptune City

Neptune City is a borough located within Monmouth County, New Jersey. It is 74.8 miles north of Atlantic City via the Garden State Parkway. It is just over a one-hour drive to New York City. The main roadways are West Sylvania Avenue and NJ Route 35.

History

The New Jersey Legislature officially incorporated the 576-acre area, named after the Roman god of the sea, into a borough in 1881. The first factory built in the town was the Steiner and Son's Pajama Factory in 1891. It was erected on land donated by James A. Bradley. Originally from Austria, Immanuel Steiner was a silk dealer, but in the 1960s, he immigrated to New York. He moved into the Neptune City area to expand his growing business.

By 1918, the company had as many as 2,000 employees in many different locations, including:

  • Neptune City
  • Neptune
  • Asbury Park
  • Long Branch
  • Keyport
  • Freehold
  • Manasquan
  • Toms River

With business booming, they constructed a baseball field in between the two factory buildings on Seventh and Fourth Avenues. During the spring of 1922, members of the New York Yankees, including Babe Ruth, played an exhibition game on the field.

Unfortunately, business would begin to decline, and in 1939, they shut the factory down. Michael and Mario Mirabelli purchased the building and began manufacturing military clothing in 1940. During World War II, they produced almost $11 billion worth. Their success was short-lived due to accusations that they were using lower-quality materials in the late 1950s. This scandal would cause them to go out of business by the early 1960s.
