Neptune Township

The township is located on the eastern edge of Monmouth County in the center of the state of New Jersey. The 5,657.6-acre township consists of 8.11% or 460.8 acres of water, including Jumping, Wells, and Hollow Brooks. Some close-by towns include Wanamassa, Asbury Park, Bradley Beach, and Neptune City. 

History

On February 26, 1879, the township was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Taking land that was once part of Ocean Township, the area was named after the Roman deity of water based on its location on the Atlantic Ocean. During the course of twenty years, portions of the township were taken to form other communities. However, in June of 1921, they were forced to restore the land to the township as it was deemed unconstitutional. These communities included: 

  • 1881 - Neptune City
  • 1893 - Bradley Beach
  • 1920 - Ocean Grove

Community

The area is home to the historical Great Auditorium. The wooden building was constructed in 1894 and still remains the same. It is the host of great acoustics due to the barrel-vaulted ceiling, also constructed out of wood. Within the doors is one of the twenty largest pipe organs in the world that organ builder Robert Hope-Jones installed in 1908. The concert venue has featured appearances by many performers, including:

Fun Facts

One of the many notable people from the area is actor Danny DeVito. DeVito was born in 1944 in the township to a small business owner. He is known for his featured roles in films, including:

  • Matilda
  • The Lorax
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Demographics

The town's population was 27,935 in 2010 and included 11,201 households and 6,844 families. This was an increase of 0.9% following twenty years of population decreasing. The racial makeup of the township was the following: 

  • 53.18% white 
  • 38.56% African American
  • 9.33% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.34% Native American
  • 2.26% Asian
  • 0.03% Pacific Islander
  • 2.51% other races
  • 3.12% two or more races

English is the predominantly spoken language, in addition to French, Creole, and Spanish.  Some of the most common ancestries found within the community were the following:

  • Irish
  •  Italian
  • German
  • English
  • Haitian

Within the township, the median annual income per household was $58,630 in 2010. For a family, the median annual income was $74,422, including a margin of error of giving or take $5,369. The occupational makeup of the working townspeople was the following:

  • 11.60% sales and service occupations
  • 10.09% clerical, assistant, and technical support positions
  • 8.11% healthcare professions
