A Historical View of Oradell, NJ

The personal injury lawyers in Oradell, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys have presented the following article on the community's history for your reading enjoyment.

Oradell

The borough of Oradell is situated in the center of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey.  Emerson and Haworth are to the north of the borough, while New Milford and River Edge are to its south. The 1,644.8-acre community came in 68th as the best place to live in the state in 2010 by New Jersey Monthly. In 2016, it was the winner of the "New Jersey's Best Towns for Families," according to New Jersey Family.

History

The neighborhood was originally incorporated as the borough of Delford in 1894. It took land from portions of Midland Township, now known as Rochelle Park, Harrington Township, and Palisades Township. The name changed to Oradell on November 12, 1920, but the unincorporated community of Delford is still within the borough.

In 1923, the Oradell Reservoir Dam was finished along the Hackensack River, forming the Oradell Reservoir. The reservoir, fed by the  Pascack Brook and Dwars Kill along with the Hackensack River, has greatly reduced the amount of flooding to the area. However, in 2011 the dam did not prevent the flooding of both the community and its neighbor, New Milford, during Hurricane Irene. The water rose two feet above the dam before it spilled over into the communities.

Historical Landmarks

Located on Kinderkamack Road is the Atwood-Blauvelt mansion built in 1897. Although the former owner of the house and its 4.3-acre property foreclosed on it in 2013, the house is now the site of the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum. The home was originally built for Kimball Chase Atwood before being sold to its second owner in 1926, Elmer Blauvelt. The mansion was designed using a shingle-style architecture popular during the late 19th century and contains 25 rooms.

The community has two Boy Scout troops, Troop 142 and Troop 36. Troop 36 was the original Troop 1 that was the first chartered troop in the United States, established in 1911. The troop is the oldest and largest in New Jersey and the second-oldest in the United States to continually be operating. The troop includes more than 170 Eagle Scouts.

Demographics

Per the census in 2010, the area was home to 7,978 residents, which included 2,749 households and 2,293 families. This was a decrease from the 2000 count of 8,047 residents, including 2,789 households and 2,300 families. The racial makeup of the community was the following:

  • 85.79% white
  • 0.68% African American
  • 4.98% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.08% Native American
  • 11.26% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 0.80% other races
  • 1.40% two or more races

In 2010 the median income per household was $123,750 with an error margin of $23,641, give or take. This was a substantial increase from the income median in 2000 that was $91,014. The occupational breakdown of the working residents was the following:

  • 16.14% sales and service professions
  • 15.19% executive and management roles
  • 11.77% office and administrative support positions
