Paterson

The city of Paterson is the largest in Passaic County, New Jersey. It is the third-most-populous city in the state of New Jersey. Some of the neighborhoods that are located in the city include:

History

The town was founded by the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, established by Alexander Hamilton in 1791. It was named after William Paterson, the former Governor of New Jersey and one of the signers of the Constitution. Paterson signed the charter in 1792 that officially formed the Town of Paterson. 

As the industrial boom took place, silk production became the most dominant in the area, hence the town's nickname as Silk City. Other industries that were prosperous in the town included: 

  • textile industries
  • firearm production
  • railroad locomotive manufacturing industries

Neighborhood

The town covers 5574.4 acres and includes many neighborhoods. Education is held in high regard with the residents. In 2011, the high schools changed their format to theme schools, meaning they focus on allowing the students to learn career options they might want to pursue after graduation. There are over 51 school options for the residents, including:

Demographics

According to the count by the 2010 census, the area's population was 146,199. This included 44,329 households and 32,715 families. This was a decrease of 2.0% from 2000, following an increase of 5.9% from 1990 to 2000. The racial makeup of the city's residents was the following:

  • 34.68% white
  • 31.68% African American
  • 57.63% Hispanic or Latino
  • 1.06% Native American
  • 3.34% Asian
  • 0.04% Pacific Islander
  • 23.94% other races
  • 5.26% two or more races

Initially, the town was known for its high population of Italian immigrants, but the Hispanic community has become its greatest ethnic group over time. The town has the third-largest Dominican-American population and the largest Turkish community. The Bangladeshi-American community was at an all-time high of 15,000 in 2010. 

The income medium per household was $34,086, and for a family income, it was $39,003. Men brought in an average of $30,811 annually, followed by women with $28,459. The breakdown of professions held by the working residents was the following:

  • 41.17% blue-collar jobs
  • 11.44% administrative support roles
  • 8.38% sales or service positions
  • 7.07% healthcare occupations
